With her book Somewhere, far away, Pietribiasi returns to an essential part of the “Building sites and countries” project on the origin of her research into places of silence: abandoned building sites, illegal constructions, closed mines, and abandoned houses. Begun in 2000, the project anticipates a trend that spread among photographers in the following years, that of photographing what has been forgotten.
“In terms of the photographic part of the research, ‘Building sites and countries’, I think I can say that my position is as a receiving station. When I take a photograph, there is a kind of exchange and communication between me and the place. I’m aware of the “genius loci” as an actual presence, like an appeal. I photograph what I feel more than what I see, then I try to recreate that very pure, rarefied sensation of silence and suspension of time that certain places grant me.”
